Commercial New Construction
- A project must meet the following eligibility criteria to participate in the ENS NC service:
- Project must be in design phase (pre-construction)
- Total conditioned area must be at least 15,000 Ft²;
- Project must be located in Nova Scotia and save electrical energy;
- Project must be defined as one of the following: o A new building; o An addition to an existing building;
- A major renovation* of a building 15,000 Ft² (1,394 m2) or greater;
- Project must implement at least two energy saving measures
- Project must achieve a reduction in total building energy consumption of at least 25%, and must save at least 100,000 kWh of electricity
The Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
- Purpose: The goal is to accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies, reduce carbon emissions, and stimulate economic growth in the renewable energy sector.
- Benefits: For businesses, the ITC can provide a substantial, refundable tax rebate of up to 30% of the capital cost of a solar project, significantly reducing initial investment and improving the return on investment.
- Eligibility: It applies to various clean technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy storage equipment, and other related clean energy properties.
Eligibility Criteria
General eligibility The project must be in the design phase (pre-construction), located in Nova Scotia and focus on saving electrical energy.
Project eligibility
The project must be defined as one of the following:
- A new building
- An addition to an existing building
- A major renovation* of a building 15,000 ft² (1,394 m²) or larger
Efficiency eligibility The project must:
- Implement at least two energy efficient measures
- Reduce total building energy consumption by at least 25%
- Save a minimum of 100,000 kWh of electricity
Major renovation eligibility Major renovations include space conversions, combined envelope + HVAC upgrades, or similar. Project eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Can I participate if my building is already under construction?
The program is designed for projects in the early design phase where there’s still an opportunity to make impactful decisions about energy efficiency. If your project is already under construction, please contact us to discuss potential options.
The most immediate and tangible benefit is the significant reduction in electricity bills. Once installed, solar panels generate electricity at a near-zero marginal cost. This hedges against rising electricity prices and provides long-term cost stability.
